Asking co-workers about substance abuse

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MassachusettsWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? massachusetts

My human resource department called in each of my colleagues/subordinate staff to ask if I had been drinking on job. I was never told about this. My boss called me in to say that someone sugggested I was under the influence but would not tell me who...I never received a reprimand or any notice of any consequences. I am a brittle diabetic with other health issues. Was this legal?

I don't disagree that this wasn't illegal, but it does appear to be unprofessional at best.

How did you find out about this questioning? Why didn't they talk to you first? I understand that some kinds of diabetes can often have symptoms that mimic "alcohol breath".

Apparently HR thought my department was dysfuncional. People had complained about my manager etc... I was also called in but they told me nothing about the questions to staff memebers including the person I supervised. One of the staff had start4ed yelling at me after I returned some of her work which had not been done properly. I gave it to my manager asking him to deal since I was not her direct supervisor(although I was responsible for task). He waited and when he brought her in, she came out and started callling me "frickin you" etc...
