Thumbs down

piercings and tatoos

What is the name of your state? Michigan

i have recently just been pulled aside by my managers by my job and told i had to remove a nose ring. that they received a phone call that someone was so utterly disgusted with my appearance they wanted to vomit, and they could not believe that they would hire someone like me. now i am completly insulted. I am also getting very feed up with this issue of piercings at jobs. is this not discrimination? i have tons of piercings and tattoos (which no one says anything about). I don't feel i should have to change my looks for a job, and i can do just as good a job with or without a nose ring. i am tired of being turned down from jobs. and i was told i would lose my job if i keep it in. i've had it before i got hired, and i've worn it almost 11months. now in the last month it's been an issue.

is this not discrimination? Not even close. Quite a few employers are going to take issue with facial piercings, tattos, studs, etc. You can either remove them and have more job opportunities or keep them in and continue to have these problems. It's your choice.

My response:

If the only jobs you ever expect to get in life include the phrase, "Would you like fries with your order", then go right ahead and keep your piercing.

However, I would never hire you - - and I wouldn't care how good you were at your job. I have clients to think about, and it's my clients that pay me!

You see, as long as your adamant, you'll never get a good paying job, and I'm one less employer that you'd be employed by. So, keep your piercings, and I'll take cheese on my burger, please.

Believe it or not, in the REAL work world, one attempts to present themselves in a manner that will create a pleasant and positive impression with the customer/client base that business services. If you are a grunt trimming trees, your piercings are likely irrelevant. However, in any position in which one is dealing with the general population, it is the responsibilty of the employee to show up for work sporting an appearance that enhances the customer's experience. So, if the hardware hanging out of the various holes you chose to create in your face is a turn-off to a percentage of patrons (which it very well can be) , the employer will not want you around. He actually wants his customers to come back again.

Wear your facial hardware on your own time, if it is creating employment problems, and show up looking like a mensch when you go to work.

You think pantyhose and heels are a big thrill to walk around in? One dresses in a way that is appropriate for the job.

My response:

I love it, "facial hardware"!

Gives me visions of door hinges, drawer pulls, crowbars and lead pipes.

Yeah, but they're thrilling in bed!

(Now, where do I cut that hole?)

"Not even close."

It certainly IS discrimination. It just isn't a form that the law protects against.

Technically you are correct, hoenave; however, it is understood on this forum that when a poster asked about discrimination, they are asking about ILLEGAL discrimination. In that sense, Beth was perfectly correct - this is not even close to illegal discrimination, even if in the dictionary sense it would meet the definition.
