What is the name of your state? florida
my employer wants us to sign a paper allowing him to dock our checks for shortages in the till. This would be okay except there are 3 and sometimes 4 of us in the till and my boss and his wife take money out of the till without notification of what they take out. Is this legal?

As far as I can find, the state of Florida does not have a statute forbidding employers from docking employees for shortages. Nor can I find a statute permitting it. I would be wary about signing such a paper too, in the situation you describe. Check with your state Wage and Hour division or show the paper to a local attorney for an informed opinion.
