concerned dad

my 14 yr.old son stole alchohol from a grocery store.he wasn't caught but was identified by a witness as he ran from the store .apperently he had done this 4 times before (they had security tapes of this)i talked to the police officer handling the case he told me probation would contact us and he would be charged with burglary .should i seek an attorney

I do hope you have taken your own disciplinary measures to keep your young one from a life of crime and a future behind bars.

absolutely i have,im just torn between letting the chips fall where they may or intervening in case they railroad him?

If they have enough evidence to demonstrate he's a thief, they will almost certainly arrest, prosecute, and sentence him. I don't know what part of that you consider "railroading", but he can pretty much count on that happening. So, yes, he really needs a lawyer as soon as he can get one.

Wait--does this mean he's already on probation for a previous offense?

no he's not on probation ,never bet caught stealing before.about how much $ am i looking at for representation?

Apart from in-home discipline, I hope you're looking at getting him help with his drinking problem. 'Cause I'm sorry, but if he's 14 and has knocked over a liquor store at least 4 times? Your son has a drinking problem.

Holy Hamsters!!!

Reywas I would suggest getting some attorney help just to be on the safe side and I am not sure exactly what one would charge in this instance.

Okay to start the gentleman did not come here for parenting advice, he came here for legal advice. I am sure he has thought and talked with his son about if there is a drinking issue and would likely appreciate it if people would not jump to the conclusion that his 14 year old is a boozer. Remember at 14 there is peer pressure rampant and it might just be to show off for friends not that he is downing a fifth of Jack Daniels on Saturday night.

Do not misunderstand Stealth, there very well might be a drinking issue but that is not for anyone besides the parents to decide or comment on. I agree it is a viable point on your part but I needed to put another reason the young man might have done this (even multiple times). I can think back to the stupid things I did at that age and some more than once. Do not want to see the young man labeled or demonized is all, did not mean to come across harshly if I did on my first post.
