I am quite interested in dating a person who is 16 years old and I am 21 years old. I know that it is a pretty large difference in age considering the person I am interested in is under 18 years old. I have hung out with this person a couple times and have talked to them on the phone and on the internet numerous time, but I am afriad to actually go forward with an actual relationship until I know the actual laws for Washington state. Is it legal for me to date this person? Are there any ways to ensure that no legal action can be taken against me if by chance I do start a dating relationship? Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

I beleve age of consent in WA is 16. HOWEVER! This doesn't mean you're free to do as you like. Your "love interest" is still legally a minor and his/her parents have control over him/her until the age of 18. So if they decide they don't want you sniffin' around their kid (and that includes calling, emailing, etc) - they can pursue legal action against you to keep you away.

As others have said, if you even have to question the legality - it's not a good idea. So go find yourself an adult to date.
