I am resistant to hiring an attorney, frankly, because I don't want to incur legal expenses in order to send my kid a message that mommy will try to bail him out when he does something stupid. .
If you decide to retain an attorney (and that is always the smart thing to do) part of your son's penalty for this crime should be that he pays the fees. Mows a lot of lawns, gets some kind of job - but in no way should YOU bail him out. He needs to learn now that its HIS BUTT that will be paying (heftily) for his royal screw up. Just my two cents.
