Minor son with mental illness

Our ten year old minor son who suffers from mental illness took a truck that a friend had loaned my daughter who is over eighteen, out of the yard in the middle of the night and wrecked it. The owner of the vehicle says he is going to report it as a stolen vehicle. Our son has never been in legal trouble before what can we expect and do we need a lawyer?
