My daughter's 17 year old friend has been forced to live on her own for past year or so. Custodial father kicked her out. Two months ago he dropped her insurance coverage. She now may need surgery for a possible appendicitis but doctor wants to run CAT scan first. Father refuses to help and said "Good luck with it" in sarcasm. Medical condition could turn very serious but she's a minor without resources, still in school, and working part-time. Her options? Good kid needs help.

She should check with the State's welfare ( or public assistance ) .

They should have some resources .

Her father is still legally responsible for her as is her mother. She should contact Children's Services and file a report regarding neglect.

If she is not already in the hospital, she should get a phone, lie down on her back and call for an ambulance to come pick her up to take her to the closest emergency room trying to lie still while waiting.

Appendicitis is a medical emergency with a high moretality rate if leaft untreated. Any public hospital (excluding for example VA Hospitals) MUST treat anyone who comes through their doors with a medical emergency without regard for ability to pay for services rendered. They can work out the medicare/medicaid welfare stuff later but she should be treated immediately.

Either the doctor who did not give her the CAT scan is a moron, does not work at a public hospital, or your daughter got some of the story wrong with the latter being the most likely. Even if it were not a doctor in a public hospital, he should have still called 911 for her to get her transport to the ER.
