Poor baby. If you don't like the idea of the fine they gave you, perhaps you should consider obtaining things in a more honest fashion - like paying for them.

I believe the max civil assessment for this out here is about $350 ... be lucky they didn't shoot for more.

Like holy crap dude, that's like total harassment! If I were you, I'd go straight back there and tell them to take their "settlement", fold it until it's all sharp corners, and then shove it where the sun don't shine!! Tell them they can't intimidate you into paying $100 more than someone else and that you're not going to pay it!

And don't forget to post the result here so that others don't have to go through what you did!

From California Penal Code, 490.5:
when an adult or emancipated minor has unlawfully taken merchandise from a merchant's premises, the adult or emancipated minor shall be liable to the merchant for damages of not less than fifty dollars ($50.00) nor more than five hundred dollars ($500.00), in addition to the retail value of the merchandise, if not recovered in undamaged condition, plus costs. An action for recovery of damages, pursuant to this subdivision, may be brought in small claims court if the total damages do not exceed the jurisdictional limit of such court, or in any other appropriate court. The provisions of this subdivision are in addition to other civil remedies and do not limit merchants or other persons to elect to pursue other civil remedies.
