Apt had fleas now landlord stopped payment on security deposit

We moved out of our apartment not knowing that our indoor cat had somehow contracted fleas. We received our security deposit in full with a note from our landlord thanking us for leaving the apartment in good condition, but that we should have told her about the fleas. Several days later she stopped payment on the check. We left several messages but she never returned our phone calls or sent us an explanation of why she stopped payment. By law, the 30 days have past when she was to give us detailed written proof of any damages, and the full 45 days have past when she was to return our security deposit. We sent her a certified letter with return receipt demanding our security deposit be returned to us with interest, but as of last Friday she still hadn't not picked this up from the post office. On Sunday we received a phone call from her (50 days after we moved out) in which she described something of $2,300 in bills related to the fleas. This seems rather extreme, as we were able to rid our cat and new apartment of the fleas for less than $50. Who is at fault here? We are planning on taking this issue to small claims court and want to know how best to proceed.

**A: take her to court and demand double the entire deposit back plus attorney fees and court costs.
