Can a landlord lock a tenants door?

What is the name of your state? Missouri

One of my patients just recently contacted me frantically stating his landlord locked him out. He had made a arrangement to pay his rent late mid month and missed it by five days. He was gone out of town and went home today and the locks have been changed.

Can a landlord do that? I was sure it was illegal or requires going to court.

Any help?

Most state L-T laws have abandonment provisions whereby if the rent is late and the property is vacant, it may be deemed to be abandoned which is what your post suggests happened.

Your "patient" needs to contact his landlord and make arrangements to pay his rent and get a key to the rental OR make arrangements to move his furniture/furnishings out.
