is it legal in ny state for tenant who resides in the landlord's primary residence (two family) to change any of the locks without notifying landlord? is landlord entitled to copy of keys for said locks?

Well its your choice.........

But if there is an emergency YOU would be totally and completely liable for any damages to the door and frame or windows, they had to break down, plus any other damage, to appliances carpet floors etc.

And if you changed the locks and didnt give the landlord a key, some renters insurance policies are voided.

Even supers in apartment buildings have master keys.....
