Demanding security deposit after lease

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Alabama. Landlord and tenant signed a lease stating $0 security deposit. Then took first months rent and stated it is a security deposit and rent was not paid. Is this legal?

I would stand by the lease stating that no security deposit is required.

Is this a month-to-month lease or a term lease?

This is a 12 month lease. They sent a receipt for my check marking it as security and that rent is still due.

I would send them back a copy of your lease showing that the security deposit required is "$0"

From now on do everything in writing and keep copies in your permanent file.
