Can a landlord refuse to renew a lease after giving a renewal offer?

If a lease does not automatically renew I dont see why a LL would be barred from withdrawing a renewal offer as long as they give proper written notice . How far in advance of the lease ending did the LL offer a renewal ? and when did you attempt to notify the LL that you were interested in renewing ? and exactly what does the lease say about when it must be renewed by ?
