Given one day eviction notice

We were renting an apartment for 3 months without a lease. We are paid up until the end of August2015 and were supposed to stay for month of September. On Aug 20th we received a text from our landlords telling us we can no longer live there after the 31st and they will give us our 850.00 deposit back in cash. On Aug 23 while we were out of town we received a text saying we had to be out that day and they would give us a post dated check for 30 days in the amount of 950.00 supposedly paying us 100.00 for the last week in August (should be 212)We rushed home to collect our things and found everything in trashbags in the garage. The landlords were not home and the door was boarded up. We found no check and they did not answer our phone call. Is this legal and what can we do. We don't even know if we have all our things. They gave no reason for eviction and refused to discuss it with us.Do we have a case and would it pay for us to hire an attorney.

Yes, you have a case.

You don't give your state (despite the requirement when you opened the post) but that's illegal in every state in the US.

I doubt if you are going to want to spend several thousand on an attorney so small claims court might be a better option.
