What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Hello - I was renting a room from a friend with no lease or written agreement in place. I moved out but was unable to transport my mattress at the time. The mattress was stored in the garage and there was no discussion of a removal date and I was told it was ok to keep it there. Today I was contacted and told I had 48 hours to pick it up or they would place it curbside with a "free" for anyone to pick-up sign. Do I have any rights in this situation? I have receipt of purchase for the mattress.

Thanks!
