What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

Our lease ended on 7/31. We bought a new house and moved out earlier in July. After moving our things, we made a mistake and forgot to go back and mow rental property for a month. We left keys per landlords instruction under the mat. Not only did we not receive any security deposit back, the letter from the landlord (postmarked 8/23) stated we owed additional money due to a variety of things but mostly, re-sodding the lawn and one month's lost rent due to inability to rent property. I realize we should have found a way to mow the yard, but this seems excessive. In addition, there were no receipts with letter, just estimates. We have since sent a letter back disputing the lost rent and requesting receipts for everything else and as of 9/22 no response and none of the work has been done yet. What case or cases against this landlord do I have, if any. Also, we never requested nor were offered a pre-moveout inspection if that matters.
