Our neighborhood is a quiet, peaceful, upper middle class suburb in Indiana. One house was acquired about three years ago by, for all practical purposes, an apathetic 'slum lord' who turned it into a rental. The neighborhood has had nothing but problems with the tenants- noise, disruptions, alcohol abuse, drug use and repeated visits by the police. The landlord has let the property run down and the backyard (in the midst of well groomed neighboring property) is a jungle. It has been unkept for years and full of weeds, dead trees, dead animals, etc. The landlord has been approached, but claims no responsibility...faulting the tenants. Plus, on more than one occasions, also claims that he really doesn't care so long as he gets his rent money.

Question: What are the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of a landlord to the surrounding property owners?

Thank you.

Can't you file complaints with your city/county? Here in VA if a lawn grows over 12 inches, they will give a warning and then a ticket because they say it attracts rats. As to the dead animals, I believe a call to the animal control officer or the health department is in order. Good luck! :D

Look up the State's landlord tenant Laws . Also see if their is any ordnances with the local government to make a formal complaint to . Also does your Location have a Drug
