landlord is trying to make us pay for the 29 year old carpet after 6 yrs of tenancy

What is the name of your state? Oregon. Landlord was upset that we had decided to vacate. She wanted us to buy the house, which we had been taking about with her for the first 4 of the 6 years we were there (@ that time she wasn't ready). We decided to leave because of some issues we have had with her. Ex. wind storm broke the fence in 2006 and she hasn't repaired. We had to prop up fence and tie it to the house so it would stand up. We had only 2 working burners on our range for 2+ years. ect. Now that we have vacated she is putting the house on the market. The carpet in the home is original to the house (1979) which she did not disclose to us exactly how old it was until we where in our 5th year of tenancy, we knew it was old but not that old! When we moved in the landlord appologized for the condition of the carpet, it was old and she did not have time to clean before move in and told us that they would work on getting new carpet that they just couldn't do it at the time due to issues with their autistic son (who she also admitted that her autistic son had soiled on the carpet):eek: Now that she is selling it, she is replacing the carpet and wants us to pay for all it. The carpet was in better condition when we left then when we moved in because we actually cleaned it. Can she hold us responcible for replacing her 29 yr old carpet? Shouldn't it have been changed between tenants prior to us especially if she knew her son was soiling on it?

No, the landlord cannot hold you liable for replacing a 29 year old carpet. The carpet has exceeded it's expected life and has a depreciated value of $0.
