Our landlord is saying we need to replace the front roof because my husband put screws in it for holiday lighting. The shingles on the roof were falling off with wind at the start of our move in.

Also, they want us to pay $125 for carpet cleaning. The carpet was used-cheapest one can find-berber layed ontop of concrete with no padding. When we moved in, by the end of the day our feet would be filthy. My kind mother bought us a new vacuum thinking that would help -it didn't. Being friends of the landlords I didn't cause much a fuss.

Another thing, we had accidentally backed up into the open gate and bent it. I let them know we would fix it. After a couple weeks we went there to find out that they put a rusty one up in place. They now want to charge us $30 for it. I got an estimate on a new one $26.88.

Now that were out they are socking it to us.

W first the gate you damaged it 30 dollars to install a used gate in it self is cheap . The carpets , did you rent a rug cleaner and try to clean the rug before you vacated ? Even if it is the cheapest carpet on the planet it is normal to expect that it to be reasonably clean when some one vacates a unit and rental of carpet cleaner would give you a recipt to show in court that you tried to clean it before vacating . BUT NOW for the roof trust me even with shingle damage that might have been there before you moved in , Im using alot of self restraint not saying what I think of tenants who would puncture a roof , Even with some damage YOU damaged it MORE and YOU should be expected to pay SOME of the cost of repairing roof NOT all of it BUT some , and you need to negotiate settlement with your former LL because if you dont you can expect that if your former LL takes a claim into civil court and wins because of the screws in roof the record of the civil suit can be found by other future creditors Including future LLs and used as grounds to deny rental or other credit related matters , so go negotiate and get this settled .
