Lease Termination / Now Demand Rent

What is the name of your state? Virginia

My one year lease was originally up in February but due to a vacation I was unable to submit my 60 day notice until the beginning of February. That made it so that I had to go "month-to-month" for March. I asked the management to see if they could re-rent my apartment by the end of Feb to get me out sooner. A few days after signing the end of lease agreement, I purchased a new home that was under construction and would not be completed until late May. I asked my apt. management if I could stay in my current apt. until May by going "month-to-month" and they stated that they had re-rented my apt. and I had to be moved out by the end of February as I had previously asked for. The original agreement between us was that I would be financially responsible for the apartment if they were unable to lease it. I accepted this and found a new short term apartment to move in to. I continued to check on my current apartment approximately three more times in Feb. to see if I could stay and they said my place had been leased and I still had to move out. I moved out at the end of Feb. and 11 days later my former apartment complex's management contacted me to demand rent. Apparently the tenant that was supposed to move in decided not to sign the lease. He had put a deposit down, but I guess never showed up or chose not to sign the lease. I had completely moved out of the apartment and turned in the keys to the management and now they expect me to pay the rent because the tenant they had lined up bailed on them? Am I still liable for rent?
