Needing to Break a Lease What is the name of your state? California, Santa Barbara
Here is the situation, I am leaving to study in Europe for 4 months in a week. My roomates have been aware of this for about 3 months and had come to an agreement I thought, about how rent would be compensated. I did sign on to this lease, and it is a year lease. 2 of my roomates share a room, and to my knowledge one of them was going to take over my room and my rent. That has since changed, she wishes to take over my room, but does not wish to pay the difference necessary for switching from a shared bedroom to one of her own. Their "new" plan is have this girl pay the same rate she's been paying and have me pay the difference from London. And I know how strict and binding a lease can be, so this would normally be a good deal. I know I can endanger all the roomates by breaking the lease, I know I liable for what I signed on the lease. I guess in this case I am asking for a loop hole. Short of working something out with the landlord, is there anything I can do to get out of this? I have read through my lease many times, its air tight, but I am not very familiar with the current california tenant/landlord laws. I am not looking to screw over my landlord, I have already found 2 people that would be glad to move in. I am simply trying to find a plan "b" if the landlord decides not to sign someone else on.
