In December the property owner and the property manager and I sat down for a meeting. In this meeting the property owner informed me that I needed to vacate the property as soon as possible as it was going into foreclosure. After quickly securing a loan and a pain staking search, my wife and I found a home to buy and closed on the 27th of December. On the 22nd of December we were called by the real estate company to tell us that they were listing the house and wanted us to allow them to show the home on the 23rd of December. On the 27th of December we notified the Property manager that we would vacate on the 2nd of January. On the 13th of January we recieved a certified letter from the property manager stating that the owner was filing damage claims against us for unpaid rent. technically the lease would have been up in March of 2001. The manager stated to us in a phone conversation that the reason the owner is filing this claim is because we did not give a 30 day notice. My question is does the owner have the right to file this claim even after we were told that we had to vacate because of the foreclosure?

do you have any documentation, any thing to prove there was a meeting, anything in writing,

Just state the property manager told you to move and it is his responsiblity for any damages...
