What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Mass.

I put a $950 deposit down on an apartment. 6 days later i got laid off from work and immediately notified the landlord that I could not move in due to that. I never signed a lease. The landlord is now holding the deposit until they find a new tenant. I have a copy of the unsigned lease and it only refers to the security deposit as such, and not a holding deposit. What should I do? Can I get the money back?

look for your states definitions of security deposit uses in your state govt web page links for landlord and tenant , IF they define security / damage deposits to only be used for actual physical damages to the structure then the LL should return the funds.
