Storage Unit Inside Apartment BuildingWhat is the name of your state? NV This week I noticed that someone had broken into my storage unit (Which is located inside my apartment building) but digging the wood out from the door under the deadbolt and then picking the lock. My $800 bike was stolen. I promptly reported this break in to the apartment office, and filed a police report. While the door still locks, it is loose and vulnerable to another theft in the same manner as stated above. I requested at the time of the report of break in that the lock be replaced, and a second lock be added and the door replaced if need be. The issue is that I was told this would be done "right away". The break in was reported at 9AM in the morning and by 5PM the same day, nothing had been done. I called the office and the manager grumbled about the maintenance crew and informed me someone would be right over. By 12PM the following day nothing had been done. I went into the office and brought the issue up again. I was told "It will be done ASAP, you can pick up the new key at 5PM." It is now 6PM and nothing yet has been done. Is the landlord of this storage unit responsible for the outer security of the unit even if they are not liable for any items stolen? What are my rights as a tenant? What can I do to get this resolved. Thanks in advance, Seth |

| Sory Seth, but this repair is not an emergency request. It should be less important than fixing items actually inside other tenant's rental units that were requested earlier. This is a storage unit, not living space, so it should be second priority. While the LL intended to get it fixed promptly, other important repairs may have come up. Don't expect it to be fixed overnight. Other tenants likely have plumbing problems, electric problems, A/C units in need of repair. These are more important. They can affect habitability. Your problem can't. Additionally, you said the door still locks. Someone broke into your storage unit when it was securely locked and had no problem with the door. If they could get into it then, they could get into it at anytime, no matter what condition it was in. The thief could also break into your locked car, your locked apartment, or any other area. That's what a thief does. The LL is not responsible for what a thief does. I suggest you move expensive or important items out of the storage unit until maintenance gets to fixing it. I'm sorry but it is unrealistic to expect maintenance to put your storage unit ahead of other people's living quarters. |
