Tenant Rights After Foreclosure

My husband and I have been renting a home in Michigan since July of 2002 and paying rent under a verbal agreement with an option to purchase the property after 3 years. I just received a notice to appear in court this friday due to the owner losing his property to foreclosure and a subsequent Sheriff's sale in August of 2004. The new owner is terminating tenancy and the judge could issue a 10 day eviction in court on February 18, 2005 according to the person who knocked on my door and handed me the papers today. We have been paying rent to the previous owner and had no idea that he was losing his property due to foreclosure. I have been unsuccessful at contacting the previous owner. The individual who served notice suggested that we contact the lawyer for the new owners (a management company) and ask to continue our tenancy. If the new owners refuse, do we have any rights? Don't we at least have 30 days to find a new place to live? I have 2 little children, and it is still winter in Michigan. Please help!

**A: do as suggested as the court could terminate your lease agreeement. You have no option to purchase the property.

Thank you very much for your help. At this point we do not want to purchase the property. I would just like to know if we are at least entitled to some time--at least 30 days--to find another place to live?
