Unsigned rental agreement

What is the name of your state? California
Me and a friend moved into an apartment in June 2006. I was the only name on the lease because this friend did not have good credit at the time. After a falling out I decised that I no long wanted to stay in the appartment. Looking back at my lease papers I discoved that the manager of the property signed the lease but I did not. The rent is up to date, and I am wondering if the contract is valid even if I did not sign it. The Management said that I assumed the term once I moved in and paid rent, but the first person to move into the apartment was my roommate and he also paid the first two months of rent.
Am I responsible for the amount it is to break the lease?
Am I responsible for the rent until the unit is rent out?
Or can I just put in my 30 day notice and leave to property?
I was told that I could just leave and I was told that I had to pay, Can someone please help me!
I verified with the on-sit manager that I did not sign the original document, so they have no lease with my signature!

Before I did anything, I'd be real sure you didn't sign the Landlord's copy of the lease. Did he bring two copies (one for you and one for him)? You might have signed one copy, but not yours.
