A non profit church in NYC rented their parsonage to my family about 7 years ago with the exception of a tiny office space on the first floor. We've always signed a lease but it never stated a rent increase rate. We've always had a good relationship with them, paid the utilities on the entire house including their office space and never complained about all of the things that need to be fixed which they haven't fixed in 7 years because we know their not generating much income besides the rent we pay them every month. This year though, they raised our rent 20% (from 1500 per month to 1800) and are taking away the half bath that we've always used. We want to argue it out, but want to know if this is even a legal situation to begin with and if we dont pay the full 1800 a month (cause were willing to pay 1600) what are their rights as far as eviction? What are our rights as tenants of a nonprofit organization? Please help! Thanks! | |
