Attorney did nothing - now has been fired from firm...

What is the name of your state? Wisconsin

In June 2003 we hired an attorney to help us settle some disputes with the state regarding sales tax and withholding tax for our business. The attorney got a $2500.00 retainer - the ONLY thing she did since being hired by us was to attend a "meeting" - which was about an hour & a half long - with us and a state DOR guy and a state attorney...we came to an "agreement" to do an installment plan - which would be reviewed in 6 months or so and at that time it was discussed that we would look at working out an offer of compromise. The attorney & the state rep. were to work up the agreement and it would be forwarded to us to sign & return - we began making the regular monthly payments & have continued to do so to this time even...tho' I made numerous calls to the attorney about the agreement we were to sign, she would always tell me she had to "look it over" and would send it on in a few days...that has NEVER happened...a couple months ago we decided to try working with a "tax negotiator" so sent a "revocation of power of attorney" to the attorney we had hired - it was returned to us very shortly with a letter from one of the partners in the firm for which she worked - it stated that she was no longer affiliated with them - I called immediately and talked to the man who'd sent that letter - he told me he had personally fired her and had looked thru' everything in the office and found NOTHING that in any way "resembled" OUR case - nothing at all with our name on it - thought perhaps she had taken the file with her when she left - he "suggested" to me that he would take this up with his partners and see if they could perhaps refund a portion of the money we paid - after hearing my "story" he agreed that she had definately NOT done anything like we had hired her to do....and said they felt a bit "responsible" for this situation...we have heard nothing from this office since - I wrote asking about what might be going on just a few weeks ago and still have heard nothing! Is there anything we can do?
Who would we talk to to find out what, if any recourse we might have....we STILL have a problem with the tax dispute - and are beginning to think the "tax negotiator" we are trying to work with is not going to be any better than the attorney...we can't get any answers to our questions and when we call, we are told the person we're trying to reach is "unavailable" - it's all very frustrating and we don't know where to turn....we need help! Any advice would be most welcome! This is a situation that is like a very dark cloud hanging over us constantly! Please, if anyone can give us a "direction" that might actually help us resolve these issues, we would be ever so greatful!
