attorney mistake

CALIFORNIA

I paid an immigration lawyer to file my green card. He helped out but lost track of the deadlines, which he was aware of from the beginning. I reminded him of the deadline, he kept insisting we had time. He emailed 2 days before the deadline and realized that he was wrong. I knew all along that he was wrong, I had been preparing and I filed the GC on my own (filled all forms on my own). I want the lawyer to return my money. The amount can be covered by small claims court. 1. Do I have a chance? Can I represent this in the small claims court? 2. He's in Louisiana, I was there when I signed him up but now in CA. Can I use the court in CA? I will appreciate any advice.
