| Do Lawyers Lie to Clients? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Mo
I was being sued for a $10,000 CC debt. I hired a lawyer. He called me a couple of weeks later and said that the Plaintiff wanted to settle for $3,000. Though I thought I had a lot of great defenses and could potentially win as they had no evidence to prove their case, never responded to the Discovery request, and had violated numerous consumer laws, including submitting a fake contract to the court, I agreed to settle at my attorney's advice. I wanted the stress to end, especially with the holidays around the corner.
The thing that's bothering me now is this: my lawyer had me make out the cashier's check for the $3,000 to him. I did this and later started wondering if he'd duped me. What if the CC company had agreed to dismiss the case without a monetary settlement and my attorney pocketed the money for himself? I would never know one way or the other. Is that a possibility or am I just being paranoid? |
