Free Consultations

What is the name of your state? WA

I contacted an attorney and the first thing I asked his receptionist/secretary if he does free consultations. She said he does. I made an appt. and spent about an hour with him going over my divorce papers (we are handling it ourselves). I had also asked, when I got to my appt, if this is a free consultation and I was told it was (by the lady at the front desk). Well, a few days ago I received a bill for $159 for one hour. When is something considered a "free consultation" vs time actually spent with an atty where you are charged? I will certainly pay him if everyone feels it is warranted, I just want to make sure.

A free consultation usually lasts about 15 minutes and covers general legal questions. If the attorney did anything more than this such as look at your divorce papers or offer suggestions specific to your case, I could see the charges. Also, for many attorneys, the consultation is only free if you hire them to handle your case. You should call and ask about the billing and their policies concerning free consultations.
