What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? MA
Is this the way settlement checks are usually dispersed?

Yes, it is. The attorney gets the money, puts it in a trust account, and then disburses it in accordance with the fee agreement and to pay liens that have been filed or other expenses for which promises of payment from the settlement have been made.

Please make sure that a fee agreement is already in place before you sign the limited POA, which is intended only for a one-time use.
