What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas
I just hired an attorney my dad found for me and I looked him up today and this is what I found. What does it mean? Why are lawyers usually suspended? Am I screwed because of this? Help!

For many reasons. THough what you are showing doesn't say whether he is currently off suspension and allowed to practice.

Well, I would say it is generally better to have an attorney who has not faced any disciplinary action. ;)

And I would also say that it is certainly better to have an attorney who has not had several disciplinary actions in a row that span a good number of years and who is not currently serving a probated suspension.

A suspension is, basically, a temporary deprivation of attorney privileges. A probated suspension means that the attorney has agreed to certain conditions so that he can, in most cases, continue to practice law. But he must meet these certain conditions during his probationary period (there can be restrictions placed on his practice) and if he fails to meet the conditions set out for him, then his probation is revoked and he must serve the full term of his original suspension (this without any credit given for time served during probation).

Having the attorney's probation revoked during the time when you are relying on his services sort of leaves you in the lurch, as he will be suspended from practicing law during his suspension. It is probably a good idea for you to look into the reasons for his suspensions.

Attorneys can have suspensions for a whole bunch of different reasons - mishandling of a case in some way or misappropriating a client's funds, for two examples.

You can contact the State Bar of Texas for further information on this attorney and his disciplinary history.
