I want payment now...but I'm not done working...!!!

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Puerto Rico

Hi...My mother passed away in Nov '06 in NY. She had a will made there, but not one in PR. When we tried to liquidate her estate, businesses in PR would not accept her will from NY. So, we needed to get a "Declaration of Heirs" and we used an attorney my mom had working on some litigations about her residence(also because the house was going to be a factor in the process). He finally has paperwork for us to go to the banks. Once there he demands immediate payment! Is this required? We asked if he finished the litigations of title of the house and he states that he only thing left is for him to submit final document and sometime afterwards we will get the official title from the government. But that he will not submit these till he gets paid in full. Ok....what the heck...he has not finished all the work, but yet he wants us to pay him....I don't think thats how it works.... Please advise how to proceed
