Lawyer not working in my favor

What is the name of your state? TX I have court dealing with IA, I have an Iowa attorney and it seems that I can not get anything done in my favor. How do I determine that the lawyer I have is not doing his job or that I have no positive side to my situation?

Fire the first lawyer.

Find a second lawyer.

Expect to pay the second lawyer a large retainer fee (non-refundable if his bar allows such).
