legal name was incorrect during court

What is the name of your state? California

During court proceedings for my son for an assault with a deadly weapon(which was dropped to a battery charge) the name they called him was not his legal name. For example, His legal name is James Brown (not really, just an example) but the balif and the judge and his public defender called him John Doe. His release papers from jail are in the name of John Doe with James Brown handwritten in, however, he was listed correctly when we checked the "who's in jail". What can we do to correct the records and do we have any recourse we can take against the public defender for not defending our son correctly?

Was the "incorrect name" a name that he uses? As in his legal name is James Brown but he goes by Jimmy Brown or Buster Brown?

Are you saying this was a case of mistaken identity? How does your son think he was incorrectly defended?

I don't see what recourse you would have at all. It seems questionable whether your son has any sort of claim, either.
