New Lawyer for Custody

What is the name of your state? Alabama

I am not sure if this is the correct place to ask this question, but maybe you guys can help me. I had a lawyer whi was handling my child custody case about 2 years ago. He did not do much by way of helping me but that is not why I am here. I still owe him money from services dealing with the last custody battle. I am currently in the process of finding a new attorney to help me since this other one isnt being helpful. Is it ok to hire a new attorney for this case if I have not finished paying off the last one? And can I call the last one up and request that they close my file and give me a copy? Thanks.
