No contract with lawyer

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? New York
I had obtained this federal worker's comp lawyer back in 2005. My case ended in June 2005 with lawyer. Now I have obtained him again for help with schedule award for worker's compensation. I have not signed any contract to hire him but he has taken the case. He has told me it takes about a month once filed. Yet he has not done anything with my case. He was suppose to contact me when he receives medicals from doctors' office, he never called. Todate, it has been a month, I call him with any update. He wanted to set me up with a doctor to do ama report. why do I need this with another doctor, when I had my own specialist for over 10 years. Now he wants me ask my doctor is he familiar with the AMA guide to disability and if so get back to him and when I do I can't reach him. I need my money because my husband is unemployed. I did ask my doctor and of course he is familiar. what can I do nicely to get this lawyer on the ball? Cee
