paying lawyer

I have been charged with Dui in Berks county Pa. Thinking it would be my first offense and I would get accepted into ARD, I hired a Lawyer just as a buffer because I was afraid the prelim judge might not sign due to an altercation with a secretary telling him I was rude. Anyway this Lawyer asked for cash. He had been recommended by a friend and apparently helped him out quite a bit in his dui related case so I figured I'd trust him for some reason. I have already paid him 600 for a 10 minute consultation and to hold my hand at the prelim but now he won't answer my calls now that I found my ARD was refused due to a previous deferment program in florida 8 years ago for a parafinila charge.

Did this lawyer pull a fast one on me? Am I going to get a huge bill in the mail saying I need to pay him considering I have no evidence I did because he never gave me a receipt on his letterhead or anything.
