how many years do lawyers have to keep client closed files before they can be destroyed?

A general rule of thumb is five years, but it can depend on what kind of documents are involved. An original Will, for example, should be kept until the client dies and the Will is handed over for probate. With changes in technology, keeping a paper file is becoming obsolete because a scanned version is much easier to store. Some files are too large for that.

Why do you ask?
