What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Rhode Island
I recently placed an ad to sell my wifes car, a 1995 VW Cabrio on Craigslist. The was taken off the road and stored in our yard for approx. 1 year. We cleaned the car up, replaced the battery with a new one, there were no major problems with the car when we took it off the road, we just purchased a new one. I listed the VW for $2,500 which is low NADA. printed the report out to place in a file with a pile of service records given to us by the last owner. We had a buyer for the car, they came and checked it out, disclosed the few problems, mostly cosmetic, that I knew. They also drove the car up and down the street a few times. I excepted an offer of $2,300 to which they left a $500 deposit.
2day later they pick the car up. I issued a bill of sale stating " As-Is condition no expressed warranties. the next day I receive a phone call telling me I sold them an un safe car which needed a lot of repair and would not pass state inspection. I stated the car was sold AS-Is and I refuse to give them there money back. The call the next day was wanting 50% of the safety related repair bill $450. or we will take you to court. In my research of the law posted on the attorney generals office web site is an answer to the very question" No, there is not a lemon law for private party sales but, anyone selling a car should pass state safety regulations. I have looked hi and low for this law.... can't find it anywhere. Can someone tell me were this law is written, not in any Rhode Island law book !!! As far as I'm concerned I sold the car AS-IS... (Period)

Is there a Lemon Law for a car sale between private parties?

No, however, a private party cannot sell a car that does not meet the inspection standards of the state.

Ask for a report from the mechanic and get a second opinion at a mechanic of your choice.
