Can someone help?

What is the name of your state? Texas

I just bought a used car from one of those tiny backyard dealerships. I made a written contract with the salesman that I was buying the car pending an inspection by a liscensed mechanic. In this contract I stated that I would pay 1,000 down to hold the car, and come back and take it to a nearby garage when it was open. OK, I go to get the car, he won't let it off the lot without payment in full, stating that our contract is protecting my interests and his boss won't let him and blah blah blah. He demands payment for tags and title on the spot as well, the title to be transfered the next day when title office is open.

Long story short, mechanic was unable to look at car that day, made arrangements for the next week because I had to work, when car was checked out it was found to be unsafe to drive, and dealer just says "oh, that's too bad" and is not making a move to correct this problem.

It's been three weeks since contract was signed, and dealer has all my money, title has been transfered into my name, and car is useless and should be in a junkyard somewhere. Can I do anything???

You are stuck. Before a dime crossed the table the car should have been inspected. When they said no, you should have walked away. They knew the car was junk, that's why they wanted the money first. Caveat Emptor, the buyer beware.
