car title question

A freind of mine is selling a car which I was going to buy. He purchased the car 5 years ago in california and he just found out the title was never transferred into his name. How can we go about getting the title into his name so I can buy the car from him. Does he need to contact who he bought the car from in california and have the title trans to him? or is there a faster, simpler way to get the title transferred?

Any advice on how to get the title, or info I can look up on getting this accomplished would be appreciated.
