Question

I Sold A Puppy...

What is the name of your state? FLORIDA
I purchased a puppy at 8 weeks old from a private breeder. I visited the breeder and the puppies/parents every weekend until the puppy was ready to be taken home at 8 weeks old. All puppies and parents were extremely well taken care of, not in cages and from what I saw...very healthy and bonded to their owners.
Well, unfortunately, we only had the puppy for 2 months because my son's allergies became to much to handle. We sold the puppy(less than what was paid) and the puppy had all the required shots up to date, including his papers. His last vet visit, he was healthy with no signs of health problems, we even had him microchipped for the new family who purchased him.
Well, now the family has notified us that after a visit to the vet for a small leg injury, he was diagnosed with demodex mange(puppy mange). Not the contagious mange but curable with 9 weeks of dips and baths. Apparently the vet stated it is an inherited trait from the parents and thus recommended for him to be neutered and not bred, which is why the family is somewhat upset. In other words they are requesting the return of their money and that I should contact the breeder where I purchased him from.
The breeder where I first got him has had no problems with the other puppies but then again demodex mange, I believe can show up at anytime.
Can anyone advice on what I should do...Legally, do I have to return the money(morally my mother says i should) but then again I did not know of any health problems prior to selling the dog either....help!

Based solely on your post, and assuming you made no guarantees as to health, you do NOT have to return anything to them. Simply, they had the right to request a health 'guarantee' or at a minimum a period where they could have their vet inspect the animal. Absent either of those provisions... you have NO obligation to refund their money.

Why has he spent over $1.35M in legal fees to block disclosure... rather than spend $12 for a VALID birth cert to settle the matter? The 'certificate' he has presented doesn't qualify to get a drivers license, wouldn't allow a child to qualify for Little League, or for a real citizen to get a US passport!

No, there was no verbal or manual contract set up on health guarantees or anything, even with the breeder and I. It was just a cash deal on both sides.
