need to know where to turn?

California. I bought a truck, appx. 2 1/2 years ago, and when it was purchased, the "check engine" light was on. I had a work order to repair this. I took the truck in the next week, and they turned the light off. As I was driving home, the light came back on. I called the dealer, and was told to bring the truck back in. I took the next day off work, and allowed this dealer to fix the problem. After 6 hours, and watching numerous like trucks, and suv's come by, and the mechanics removing parts, and installing on mine, they said I would have to come back again. The next week, I took another day off work, and went back down to the dealer. This time they had their mechanic try to repair it. Another 7 hours later, they informed me they would have to have the truck for a week. After 15 days of waiting, they said they were ready, but i said they needed to furnish me with a rental car.
This took another 2 weeks to get approval. I droped the truck off, and waited a week. They said that the truck was fixed, and there are no more problems, that they replaced the main computer. Then 2 months ago, I went to smog test the truck, and found that it would not pass, due to a computer problem. I would have never known that this problem was reoccuring, that I had not have had the smog check done, which is required every two years. The "check engine" light, is on, but not on the dash. Seeing that the light on the dash is not on, I would not have known about this problem, until the required smog test is due. I have a feeling that the dealer has sold me a vehicele that is not able to pass a smog test. This is per the diagnosis computer. This seems to tell me, that the dealer has not corrected the problem, which the truck has been serviced for three times prior. I paid to have the diagnosis done, and found that the main computer has a problem. The dealer said they would repair, if I had the diagnosis done, and the problem was with the computer. I went there, and now, they want to take the truck again, without a rental in return.
I would like to know where I stand legally. If there is any recourse for this, and how much this would cost. This is a large chain, that specializes problem credit, and has a reputation for selling sub-par vehiceles.

After reading your post I'm assuming you had no more problems until 2 1/2 years later, correct? That's pretty good from a car that you bought from a place you KNEW had a habit of selling "sub-par" vehicles.
