took a dog "free to good home"

What is the name of your state? I live in Canada but am just looking for general information. 6 days ago we took a dog that was advertised as "Free to a good home" we were lead to believe he was in good health and no poblems, we were advised of a food allergy and of specific habits such as chewing and anxiety but that was fine. upon arrival home we walked the dog and byt the time he had been walked the second time we noticed that he had a limp. I contacted the prvious owner to see if it was something that they were aware of and she indicated that maybe in the summer she had noticed but it went away after a few days. We went to the vet for a check up and it turns out that he may have had a fractured femur at some point that was not attended to, or it could be a tumor and it is very possible that he may also have bad hips however xrays will have to confirm. the costs are starting to mount, vet visit, xrays etc. do we have any recourse with the prvious owner as no money changed hands?
