What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? West Virginia
My wife and I purchased an automobile from texas 1 year ago...the check engine light came on about a week after we got the car...it then broke down about 3 months later , while having the car checked out, the diagnostic equipt at auto zone read a transmission slip issue, but when we took it to the dealer, the check engine light went off, they put a new fuel pump in and replaced the fuel filter and the car was running fine...but the check engine light came back on 2 weeks later...since it did not seem to effect performance, i just left it go...we just took the car back in for service monday and the code showed the transmission slip, and they noticed a leak in the rack and pinion steering, repaires estimated at $8,500 we purchased the vehicle 12 months ago and put about 10,000 miles on it...the car was purchased as is...no warrenty...I imagine that I have no recourse, but a little research never hurts....is there a statue of limitations on lemon law cases in WV? things go wrong with vehicles all the time, i understand that, but the fact that they cleared the check engine code and shipped the car to us, only to have it rear its ugly head a week later, with no mention of that in the description, seems a little dicy...thanks in advance for your time...Sincerely, Reuel

You guessed correctly. The lemon law for the state in which you purchased the vehicle would apply, in Texas it does not apply to used vehicles.

I'd also suggest an independent estimate, $8500 seems excessive for what you describe.
