I have an extended warrenty on a 2000 volkswagon Jetta that has an oil consumption problem. The piston rings need to be replaced. Currently the car has over 72K miles on it but the problem originated after a trip to Jiffy Lube around 40K miles and they notified me that the car was consuming an abnormal amount of oil. I called the dealership and they told me this was normal for the Jetta. Around 55K miles on it, after I brought it in for a tune up they decided to perform an oil consumption test. They said that my piston rings were bad and needed to be replaced. They also said that my normal warrenty nor my extended warrenty would cover this since it was outside of the 50K miles. I told them the problem existed prior to 50K but that they said nothing was wrong. This is not just a isolated problem for my jetta, if you visit myvwlemon.com and search for oil you will see there are others with this problem. My local dealership has refused to use any sort of goodwill to fix this problem

Is my local volkswagon dealer at fault since they orignally told me nothing was wrong and then decided the piston rings were bad after my warrenty expired.

Do you have any work orders, etc from your trip to the dealership prior to 50K miles? If so, does it list the oil consumption as a problem?

If so, contact the local VW dealers association and VW directly...sometimes they can push the dealer to make the goodwill gestures.
