| It is so true that people tend to form opinions about names long before they meet someone. I am SO sick of "Heidi? Like that little Swiss girl in the mountains?" I'm not 8. I don't wear pigtails or Shirley Temple curls (I did when I was little though.) I don't yodel. I didn't grow up an orphan nor was I raised by my grandfather. These though are all things that people love to bring up or talk about if they have known my name before meeting me. Somehow I manage to escape the evil of it all if I get the chance to make a first impression in person. Dispite it all, the Shirley Temple version of Heidi is still by far my favorite movie ever.
I did give both my daughters names that are feminine but can be shortened to a "boys" name and call both by that nickname. This doesn't seem to have had in impact on personality in any way, even though both were more familiar with their "boy" names than their full names early on. Both will have the advantage of having a choice in how they first appear on paper to others. Should I be blessed with another daugher I won't hesitate to do the same for her.
Oh, and to go with stupidity in naming children... my best friend growing up had the worst initials ever given to a child. Poor thing, they were A. S. S. What kind of parent does that? |
